5 ways to detoxify your mind and body

Ujjayi breath

Yoga is an energy practice and Yogic breathing or Pranayama techniques influence this flow of energy affecting our health on all levels. It is suggested that Pranayama is the most important element of a yoga practice. These techniques have been used since ancient times in conjunction with asanas (postures) to bring the body and mind to an optimum state of balance. One particular form of Pranayama which is most typically done in association with asana practice is Ujjayi breath. This is also called ocean breath or cobra breath because of the sounds associated to this breathing.

Ujjayi is diaphragmatic breath which goes right down into the belly. The heavy sound is created by moving the glottis as air passes through.

The benefits of Ujjayi breath are plenty and among them are increased blood oxygenation, regulating blood pressure, removing carbon dioxide from lung tissue, strengthens the diaphragm, boosts immunity, helps relieve asthma and other respiratory diseases etc. It also helps the mind to stay present and self-aware thus giving the technique a meditative quality.

Our Vinyasa flow, De-stress yoga and Vibrant Hatha yoga classes at GC Yoga Studios all utilize this form of breath to enhance practice.

Sivananda yoga on Wednesdays at 8pm includes Anuloma Viloma and Kapalabhati breathing exercises specifically to calm the mind and ease respiration problems such as allergies and asthma. Come to this class to see how these techniques can benefit you.

Dynamic and Power yoga also use powerful Pranayama techniques which help purify the blood and lymph system. The strong asana practice builds stamina and endurance. A typical Power yoga class would work on stretching and compressing the entire body and waste products like carbon dioxide, lactic acid and lymphatic fluid from deep tissues of the body are released, something a gym session just cannot reach!
